Simple Summer Skirt
After our son was born in 2008, I didn't have a car or a lot of money to go out and buy new clothes. My maternity clothes were getting too big, fast. It was summer and I needed something to wear around the house. I had a bunch of scrap fabrics laying around and decided to make some skirts. Every summer since, I have been making a new summer skirt to add to my collection. Everyone asks me where I get my quirky skirts and I say I just make them myself and then they want to know how. Well, here's how it's done!

 |
Here's what you'll need to draft the pattern:
Measuring tape
Sharpee, pen, or pencil
Scissors
Ruler or some sort of straight edge
Paper bag cut open
Here's what you'll need to sew your skirt:
1 yard of fabric
1/4" braided elastic cut to measurement
Thread
Sewing machine or sewing needle
Pins
|
Drafting Your Pattern
1. Measure around the widest part of your body (usually around your butt or waist.) Divide that number in half. That will be your width measurement.
|
 |
2. Measure the distance from your waist to however long you want your skirt. (Knee length is usually a pretty good standard.)
|
 |
3. Create an I shape on your paper bag using your lenght measurement as your center line and half of your width measurement on the top and bottom. Add 2” to the length of the width measurement on the bottom.
4. Connect the open ends of the top and bottom by drawing a line from point to point closing up your pattern.
5. Copy a line 0.25” around each side of your pattern to allow for your hemline and cut. |

|
Sewing Your Skirt
1. Fold fabric over and place pattern on top of fabric pinning it in place. This will cut out 2 pieces in one shot.
2. Take two pieces and pin them together so that the wrong side of the fabric is on the outside.
3. Sew down both sides leaving the top and bottom open.
4. Open the skirt up and use a zig zag stitch sewing along the hemline of the top and bottom. *You can use a serger if you have one on this step. **Contrasting thread colors make for a fun option.
5. Take the FULL measurement you origingally got from measuring your widest part and subtract 1” and cut your elastic at that size. Sew shut at one end.
6. Place elastic along the top, fold over and pin in place. Directly across from pin, place elastic and fold over. Evenly stretch along pinned parts to place elastic along waistband and pin in place.
7. Sew elastic in place and remove pins. Turn right side out and you have a fun summer skirt! |
