How To Carry: A Trip To US Firearms Academy For A Variety of Concealed Carry Options
More and more women are choosing to protect themselves by carrying guns every day. But with more women carrying guns arises the essential question every woman must ask herself upon purchasing her personal protection pistol: How will I carry this gun? To the novice shooter, there really are one of two options: a holster or a purse. However, many new shooters who choose to carry in a purse do not realize that there are purses made specifically for holding guns. As more women are carrying, manufacturers are wising up and have been designing several other alternative concealed carry options available out there. |
| I took a trip to US Firearms Academy in Reno, NV to discuss some of the alternative concealed carry options with one of the salesmen, John Miller. I have been to several of the local gun stores in town and I must say, when it comes to my concealed carry needs, US Firearms Academy is my number one choice. In addition to offering a wide selection of quality carry guns at reasonable prices, they also offer a wide array of holsters, clothing, accessories, cleaning supplies, and firearm training classes. |

John deals with many customers every day and a large number of them are women. He says the most popular carry guns purchased by women tend to be, "A toss up between J-frame revolvers, pocket .380's, and sub compact 9mm like Glocks and XDs." While most women tend to like guns that range in the .380 or .38 Special calibers, most women still choose to carry with standard holsters.
|
But don't worry if you're not one of the many who likes a traditional holster. There are alternatives. Not every holster sits outside of your pants. There are many inside the waistband (IWB) holster options available. One of the more popular models is CompTac's Minotaur MTAC leather holster. It clips onto a belt buckle and sits inside the waist. There are additional options for it like a C shaped clip and a V (velcro) clip that strap onto the holster if you need to wear shirts tucked in and do not want to have the clips showing. They offer a wide variety of holsters to choose from ranging from $30 to $80.

Of course not all women are interested in holsters. Some still prefere purses. If that is your carry method of choice, US Firearms Academy offers a large selection of purses from Coronado Leather and Gun Tote'n Mamas. The purses are all designed with external zippered gun pockets for easy access and ensure your gun does not get lost among the contents of your purse. Purses range in price from $80 up to $250.

| Some women still prefer an on-body form of carry and there are a wide variety of options available from belly bands, undershirts and shorts. The belly bands are elastic holsters that wrap around the lower torso and you can slide a pistol in place on one of the designated pistol slots on the band. The shirts and shorts are undergarments with built in holsters for pistols under the arm on shirts, and in the small of back area on the shorts. Belly bands are all $30 and the undergarments are $69.95. |

Finally, if you do not want to use a holster, purse, belly band or undergarment, then maybe you might like CompTac's Centerline Holster, otherwise known as a pendant style holster. If it sounds like what you are thinking of, you are right. This type of holster is worn around the neck like a necklace. If you love jewelery, this might be the holster for you. I have never seen one of these holsters until I went to US Firearms Academy but I'm sure it's not a new concept. |

You will need to play around with a few different holsters to figure out what one works for you. There really is no right or wrong choice for carrying. While there are definitely differences of opinions, it is one of those things that you will know what is good for you when you try it out. |
If you are ever in the Reno, NV area, be sure to stop by US Firearms Academy and tell them the Gunslinging Housewife sent you. They are open Monday through Saturday 9:00 am - 9:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. They have a great selection of concealed carry options. And don't worry, if you don't live in Reno, they have a retail website where you can purchase items available in the store online.
