Star Targets Exploding Targets

About a year ago, I saw a booth at the Crossroads of the West gun show for a product called Star Targets. I wasn't sure what it was about and not too long after, looked on youtube for some more information. What I found were a slew of awesome videos of people shooting targets that literally blew up when the bullet hit them. Not too long after, at the next gun show, my husband came home with about $30 worth of their products (which, is actually a pretty decent amount of targets!)

I've actually had the joy of meeting the guys at Star Targets, who gave me a rundown of their product. The guys are based in Utah and are composed of three brothers and their friend. First off, Star Targets is not tannerite. A lot of people make the misconception that it is tannerite, but it is actually a different product all together. The guys spent a long time devising a compound and a catalyst that when mixed create the exploding target. The powder catalyst is packaged in a little bag separate from the compound so technically it is not manufactured as an "explosive" but rather the manufacturing part happens when the consumer mixes it themselves, hence, they can actually legally ship this product and sell it via their online retailers. Star Targets doesn't actually ship their product or sell it on their website. The only time you will deal with the guys is if you go to a gun show and they are there and you can buy it directly from them. Personally, I prefer this route as they are some of the nicest guys you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting.

They have a few different options when it comes to products. There are the high power/centerfire rifle targets (show above), then there are also rimfire targets (right top), and their pistol rimfire JRs targets (right bottom). As mentioned earlier, simply mix the black powder with the compound for about two minutes, place a few yards out, and shoot. What you get is a big boom. For the JRs, mix all of the components of the two bags together and place in the little snap caps. Stuff them full for best results. Place on a sturdy surface at least 25 feet out and shoot. Again, you will get a big boom.

These are a great way to make shooting even more fun. The nice thing is they aren't that expensive so you can buy a bunch to take out, or just save them and take a few out at a time. As I mentioned earlier, you can buy it directly from Star Targets in person at gun shows, or, you can buy it from some of their online retailers below. Prices vary per retailer but usually range from $6.99 to $17.99 and of course they're always a little lower if you get them directly at a gun show. However, if you don't have that option, there are many online retailers who carry their products. Some restrictions that apply when purchasing. See retailers for specific details.
