PVC Target Stands

Everyone has some variation of what they use for target stands. Some people go out and buy nice ones. Others just improvise with boxes. Some make their own with metal. The reality of it is, there is no right or wrong. If something works for you, then go with it. I'm sure somewhere in the world, there is someone disagreeing with me and that's fine. One of my favorite stands is actually made of PVC and wood.

Here's what you'll need:
One 1 1/2" wide 10' long pole cut down as follows:
(5) 16" poles
(2) 20" poles
(2) 1 1/2" End caps
(2) 1 1/2" T-bars
(2) 1 1/2" 90º elbows
(2) 4'x1 1/4"x3/4" wood stakes (can cut one 8'x1 1/4"x3/4" stake in half)
Rubber mallet
PVC glue (optional)
Colorful duct tape (optional)
1. Take the two 20" poles and place them in the t-bars so they are on the center of the T. If you are gluing your stand together, you will want to place PVC glue on any areas you are connecting together and allow to dry. If need be, you can use the mallet to hammer any sticky parts in place. I will not mention glue or mallet from this step out as you can probably figure it out if you want/need it or not.
2. Place one of the 16" poles on the remaining two sides of each t-bar.
3. Place an end cap on one of the 16" poles on each t-bar.
4. Place a 90º elbow on the other 16" bole on the other side of the t-bar that does not have an end cap.
5. Connect two t-bars with the remaining 16" pole by connecting it at the openings of the 90º elbows.
6. Place wood stakes in top of stands and voila!

At this point, all you need to do is attach some cardboard with a staple gun and you're ready to shoot!

Now, if you're like my friend Jennifer M., it's not enough to have just a boring target stand. Neither of us wanted to have plain white stands and I was thinking of going a spray paint route, but the problem with that is, it will rub off. Jennifer solved that problem with colored duct tape. She wrapped it around her stand several times to create a beautiful neon green stand. Some may laugh at her stand, but the neat thing about this is it is also a preventative measure. PVC will shatter if you accidentally hit it. This will prevent the PVC from shattering completely, although it will still be broken underneath. Think of it in a sense of how people who live in hurricaine territories tape up their windows when storms come. targetstandgreen.jpg
