June 2010: I Heart Rifles Well! It's June and maybe for some of you the weather has been lovely, but here in Reno, NV, it's starting to come together. We've been having a slew of rain lately and that has definitely put a damper on potential shooting days. Of course there were a few nice days recently in which I was able to go out shooting and I chose to shoot rifles. So this month, I would like to dedicate to rifles in the "I Heart Rifles" issue of The Gunslinging Housewife. I know some women out there have maybe never shot rifles, and if you haven't I highly recommend you learn to shoot one because it is truly the most fun you will have in your life. I tell people I meet, "I shoot a pistol for protection. I shoot a rifle because it's what I love doing." For those of you who do shoot rifles, I'm sure you will agree with me on this. There is no joy greater than shooting a rifle and shooting it well. I would like to briefly take a minute during this rifle month to discuss one of my favorite pieces of furniture: my rifle cabinet. I say "my" because it does in fact belong solely to me. It has a story that is connected to me that I will share. I saw this hideous rifle cabinet at the SPCA thrift store in Reno, NV. It was $80. I loved it but our apartment had no room for it. I learned that the store would go down to $65 for me because they wanted to get rid of the thing but again, I had nowhere to put it. Two months passed and I saw the thing in there still. Only this time, we were a month from moving into a larger place and I asked them if I could buy it (now dropped down to $40) and they hold it for me for a month. They said no. I told them that's fine I'll return in a month to pick it up and their snarky response was, "If it's still here." Well, of course it will still be there in one month. The thing had been there for 3 months that I knew of, who knows how much longer! It wasn't going anywhere. So, exactly one month later and two days, I went back to the thrift store on a Thursday when furniture was 20% off and purchased my rifle cabinet for a whopping $32. I also found a Coach purse there for $2. It was a good day. But the story does not end there. What happened next was the rifle cabinet came home, was sanded and spray painted black. As mentioned before, it was a horrendous shade of ugly with a cheap dark chestnut finish when I got it. The finish I did on it is a soft glossy black that is dark enough to be black, but light enough to where you can see the graining of the wood. This is by all means my favorite piece of furniture. It was my find, my three month hunt to get, my money, and my work that made it what it is today. And now it houses all our old military rifles and a few strays. Below is my beloved rifle case with all it's rifles inside and next to it above the tv and silly family photo, the Ammo Clock project in this month's Creative Corner. So, let the lovely weather start and may you all go out and get a bunch of wonderful shooting days in!
Till then, enjoy! Jenny Teague
