Kimber Super Carry Pro

This month I had the pleasure of reviewing a very nice pistol: the new Kimber Super Carry Pro. This is the latest and greatest from Kimber hit the shelves around March of 2010. For the longest time I have wanted to get a 1911 and I decided a long time ago if I do get one, it would be a Kimber. Why? Well, Kimber is synonymous with quality. And if you're going to get one of the most iconic guns of the 20th century, you better get a good one.

You Get What You Pay For

Let's face it. Kimbers are not exactly cheap. But when you get the chance to shoot one, you realize why. The quality of these guns are superb. I recently saw a shirt that said "Kimbers are what you show your friends, Glocks are what you show your enemies." It spawned a huge ridiculous debate about the pros and cons of the two guns and basically that's like comparing apples and oranges, both are fruit but so different in their own respects. Anyway, the one thing that shirt did have right is that Kimbers are definitely a status gun. It's like driving a Corvette. People look at Kimber owners and think they have good taste, a lot of money, and then they want to try out your gun. I wish this Kimber were my gun, but alas, it was only on loan for testing purposes.

The Specs

Size: Sub Compact
Magazine capacity: 8+1
Recoil: Low, very smooth
Ease of use:Easy to use. Because of the heaviness of the frame and the low recoil, shooting this .45 is like shooting a 9mm.
Misc: Great gun for home defense, carry, or competition. If you need an all around gun, this would easily fit the bill.
Cost: Pricey. It's a great gun. Made well. Definitely on par with the Kimber standards of quality. And it's going to cost you. But if you have the money, it's well worth owning.

How Does The Gunslinging Housewife Rate It?

The pro's: this is a great all-around gun. If you want a gun to defend your home, it's a great size. Not too big, not too little. It's a great caliber for defense, and because of it's heavy frame, the recoil feels really low. If you want to carry it, it is small enough to where a woman could carry it on body or in a purse. And if you're a competition shooter, it is an easy-to-handle pistol that is capable of shooting some nice groups with practice.

The con's: this is a pricey gun. If you don't have it in your budget to fork out around $1500, then you probably won't get one of these. If you plan on using it for personal protection in terms of carry, the downside is the exposed hammer. Fortunately when 1911's were originally designed, this was taken into consideration and the backstrap safety was developed. However, this will be something that will either make or break your relationship with 1911's in general.

When you let loose and shoot, the Kimber Super Carry Pro easily hits center of mass. When you plan your shots, it is capable of shooting some nice, tight groups.

Sure, some people may joke a Kimber is a status symbol and to some degree it is. But that's not to say because its a $1500 pistol that it's a bad gun. For the money you spend on it, you are going to get a top notch quality pistol. Just make sure if you are going to own a high end pistol you treat it with love. Clean and oil it regularly. And don't be afraid to take it out shooting sometime either!
