The W.A.R.R.I.O.R. In Every Woman

Vicki Kawelmacher is your average woman. A wife, mother, friend. One thing that has always been important to her is the safety of herself and her family. She extended her mission of safety and personal protection to her community when she founded The Women's Shooting Academy back in 2008. After years of teaching women (and men) both firearm and non-firearm courses, Vicki has created yet another course in personal protection that she is launching this month called The W.A.R.R.I.O.R. In Every Woman. This month, The Gunslinging Housewife is happy to have a chance to talk to Vicki about her new class and her personal experiences that drive her to inspire others.

Vicki Kawelmacher hopes to extend her concerns for personal safety to as many women as possible. She always says, "When you know better, you do better." Words that can easily apply to all aspects of life.

Gunslinging Housewife: What inspired you to create the W.A.R.R.I.O.R. seminar?
Vicki Kawelmacher: My inspiration has ALWAYS come from my students and the women I meet and talk to on a regular basis. I originally opened the Academy with two classes in mind, both firearm classes. I quickly realized that women needed more and there was nothing out there for them. Yes, I carry a gun but a gun is not for everyone. There is something in this seminar for everyone, young or old.

GH: Can you tell us a little about the seminar?
VK: The WARRIOR seminar is a 4 hour non-firearm seminar the focuses on everyday safety. There are a lot of things we can do every day to minimize our chances of becoming a statistic. I always say “when you know better, you do better” It’s time for all women to raise their safety standards, not only for themselves but their families, friends, co-workers etc. Women are masters of multi-tasking; we must learn to incorporate our safety into everything we do.

GH: You say the seminar is geared towards all women 12 and up. How do you think women will benefit from taking this seminar?
VK: I will present a variety of strategies, options and ideas to get you on the path of developing your personal safety plan. There is not a one size fill all approach that works for everyone. As women, we have a huge impact on those who we share our life with. We CAN make a difference, it must start at home and it must be taught to our children.

GH: I know you are an award winning public speaker. How have your skills as a speaker helped you convey your message to women regarding their personal protection?
VK: First and foremost it got me over my fear of speaking in front of large groups. I have been able to give my story a voice and learn the skills to convey my passion with conviction and sincerity.

GH: What is your goal in terms of the W.A.R.R.I.O.R. seminar?

VK: My goal is to take my message and seminar to a national level. I want to encourage, educate and empower as many as I can. I want to train up other instructors to help me achieve this goal. I want to see the crime statistics against women go down. I want women to step up and own there safety.

GH: If anyone is interested in becoming a certified W.A.R.R.I.O.R. instructor, how can they go about doing it?
VK: They would need to contact myself (Vicki Kawelmacher) at 775-772-7064. All that is required is a one day instructor training course. It is my thought that in order for you to be successful, I must do my part and provide you will all the necessary information and continued support. You will receive an instructor kit that will include the WARRIOR logo, the power point, marketing letters and fliers, student handbook and certificate. All this plus more will be on a CD that is yours to keep.

GH: Finally, The Gunslinging Housewife is focusing on safety and comfort at home this month. Your seminar covers ways women can be safe in several areas in life. Would you mind giving us a teaser of your seminar and give us one or two good home safety tips?
VK: In any threatening encounter there are five possible reactions you may experience: fight, flight, freeze, posture, or submit. Do you know what your natural tendency is? We will go over these in detail.

Vicki would like to leave a few tips with our readers this month to consider when thinking about safety in the car and at home:

Safety In The Car
First things first, ALWAYS have you keys in your hand as you approach your vehicle and ALWAYS lock your car doors immediately upon entering your vehicle. You do this BEFORE you do anything else, there should be no deviation from this rule. Remember, when you are locked inside, you have essentially locked anybody else out. Do not forget the fact that your car can be used as a deadly weapon if needed.

Consider keeping an emergency safety kit in your car. This kit can include such items as a flashlight, flares, first aid kit, blanket, maps, disposal camera, extra food and water.

Safety At Home
What is the biggest deterrent you can do to the front of your house to discourage criminal activity? Post a beware of dog sign up and also a sign that states “This home is under video surveillance” The criminal will more than likely pick an easier home to target.

The W.A.R.R.I.O.R. In Every Woman seminar is available through The Women's Shooting Academy. This 4 hour seminar is $60 and includes a student handbook. The first seminar is Saturday, September 25. More class listings are available on www.womenshootingacademy.com. If you are interested in taking the seminar, please call Vicki Kawelmacher at 775-772-7064.
