Actually, vinegar and baking soda, when mixed with other materials and not in the other's presence, can be very handy dandy natural cleaning agents for around the home. But when mixed together, the bubbling and fizzing that occurs when the acid and base neutralize each other provide a rather nice reaction that helps clean out your toilet. Plus, it's a lot of fun to watch. Because there's water in your toilet, it weakens the reaction and you won't wind up with the volcano of toilet errupting onto your bathroom floor. It's actually pretty fun, too, because when you scrub, it breaks down the baking soda even more and will prolong the fizzling effect.
Yeah, I'm a nerd. Try it, though. It makes cleaning the toilet fun. Get your kids involved too. You can explain the science behind what's going on in your toilet, then again, maybe it's better to not think about the science that happens in the toilet...
