Planning A Hunt

No matter where you live, chances are there is either a spring turkey season under way right now, or the season for big game tag applications is approaching. Maybe you live somewhere that doesn't have tag lotteries and you can just pay over the counter. Regardless, some people want to go out and get that tag. But what do you go for?

Here's some things to think of when planning a hunt:

What kind of equipment are you set up with? Do you have the proper gun to shoot what you want to hunt? Do you have the right ammo?

What does your freezer space look like? Since its illegal to waste game meat, do you have room to accomodate the meat you will have from a hunt? Have you thought about whether you will process your meat yourself or take it to a butcher or professional to prepare it for storage?

How will you bring your kill home? Do you have enough room in your car or will you need to rent another vehicle to transport your kill?

Can I afford this? Licences, tags, and in some places, applications cost. Other expenses may come up as well from food, transportation, accomodations, taxidermy, damage/accident repairations, injuries. No one ever plans on tripping on something and spraining an ankle or getting bit by a tic and having to go to the doctors to be treated for lyme disease (which is commonly spread by deer ticks.)

These are just a few things to think of, but the list can go on and on. Hopefully these ideas will spawn some thoughts for you to set up your perfect hunt for the year and many years to come!
