HK P7
By Jesse Teague The HK P7 is one of those guns you hear or read a lot about but few seem to have handled much. In fact it has been a gun that has been on my 'want' list for at least 10 years but have either not been able to afford it or was not able to find one for sale when I could afford it. The P7 and it's ofspring the P7M8, P7M10(.40S&W)and P7M13 have nothing less than a cult following. Those that own and love them, can't figure out why HK stopped making it. The P7 series pistols are a brilliant design in that the squeeze cock mechanism cocks or de-cocks the firing pin and allows one to safely carry a round in the chamber, knowing that the gun will fire only when the shooter is ready to do so. It also employs a very unique operating system called gas delayed blow back which allows the gun to have a fixed barrel for superior accuracy and a low bore axis for better recoil control. The Specs How Does Slim Rate it? Cons: On a down side the guns do get HOT during long shooting sessions; the P7M8's &M13's added a heat shield to the underside of the frame to address this issue. They are also on the expensive side, a P7PSP will run between $400 and $700 for a good example; the M8 and M13 series can easily reach the $1000 mark for a solid/unaltered example, the M10(.40S&W) is very hard to find as very few were produced, and consequently extremely expensive. P7's havn't been made in 15 to 20 years so new examples don't exist, the gun gets hot during prolonged shooting sessions, and though it will handle +P loads well they tend to over work the action which usually results in a missing extractor. Though the P7 is a fantastic/inovative pistol, Our test pistol came from the Heckler & Koch T&E room and looks to be almost brand new, I have the option of buying our test gun and come payday I will. |
